Use the table to compare hospital trusts on the measures NHS England publishes every month. A trust is the NHS organisation that runs one or more hospitals, so each figure covers all of its hospitals. Higher is better for the “within” columns and lower is better for the “over” columns. The figures describe how long people have waited so far, not how long you will wait.

n/s: the trust did not submit referral to treatment data for this month. –: not reported, usually because the trust does not run that service. *: fewer than 20 patients, so the percentage can swing a lot from month to month. A&E 12-hour column: the share of attendances at type 1 and 2 emergency departments that spent more than 12 hours from arrival to admission, transfer or discharge (provisional, from the Emergency Care Data Set); this is not the same as the “12-hour trolley wait” count.
Which trusts have the highest share of patients waiting under 18 weeks?
Among trusts with at least 20,000 waiting pathways in August 2026. Specialist and smaller trusts are left out because their lists are not like for like.

- Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust: 83.6%
- Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust: 80.7%
- Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust: 76.3%

- Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust: 72.8%
- Croydon Health Services NHS Trust: 72.8%
- The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust: 72.6%
Which trusts have the lowest share of patients waiting under 18 weeks?
- Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust: 50.4%
- University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust: 52.6%

A low share can reflect a trust with complex cases, a long list it is working through, or one that treats many patients from elsewhere. It is not a rating of care quality.

How do NHS England regions compare?
| Region | RTT waiting list | % under 18 wks | % over 52 wks | A&E 4-hr % (September 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| London | 1,298,105 | 67.7% | 1.0% | 77.0% |
| South East | 1,068,442 | 63.3% | 2.0% | 76.2% |
| South West | 601,782 | 67.5% | 1.2% | 71.8% |
| Midlands | 1,255,456 | 63.9% | 1.6% | 72.9% |
| East of England | 874,494 | 61.0% | 2.6% | 74.0% |
| North West | 1,064,345 | 64.3% | 1.4% | 71.8% |
| North East and Yorkshire | 1,026,589 | 68.5% | 1.4% | 75.2% |
Regional RTT figures are a Waiting Times UK calculation: the sum of published provider figures, grouped by each provider’s integrated care board and its region. They include independent-sector providers and so differ slightly from the trust table. A&E figures are NHS England’s regional totals.
Can I compare Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with England?
Not directly. Each nation sets its own standards and counts waits differently, for example Wales reports diagnostic waits over 8 weeks rather than 6. Read each figure against its own nation’s standard.
| Nation | A&E within 4 hours | MRI waits | Data month | Publisher |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scotland | 66.7% | 22.6% over 6 weeks | A&E August 2026; MRI June 2026 | Public Health Scotland |
| Wales | 63.9% | 26.8% over 8 weeks | A&E September 2026; MRI August 2026 | Welsh Government (StatsWales) |
| Northern Ireland | – | 70.6% over 6 weeks | Quarter ending June 2026 | Department of Health (NI) |
What do these measures mean?
- RTT waiting list: pathways (not people) waiting to start consultant-led treatment. One person can be on more than one pathway.
- % under 18 weeks and median weeks waited: how long people on the list have waited so far, at the end of the month.
- MRI and CT % over 6 weeks: people waiting 6 weeks or more for the scan since it was requested (DM01).
- Cancer 28-day %: people told they have cancer, or that cancer is ruled out, within 28 days of an urgent referral or screening (Faster Diagnosis Standard). 31-day: treatment within 31 days of the decision to treat. 62-day: treatment within 62 days of an urgent referral.
- A&E 4-hour %: attendances admitted, transferred or discharged within 4 hours, across all types of A&E unit.
Why can trust comparisons mislead?
- Four trusts did not submit RTT data for August 2026 (Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust), so their RTT cells show n/s and they are left out of the England total.
- Specialist trusts (for example eye, orthopaedic, children’s or cancer hospitals) treat different patients from general hospitals.
- Trusts that run urgent treatment centres score higher on the all-types A&E measure than those that only run a major A&E department.
- Cancer patients are often shared between trusts, and NHS England allocates their 62-day waits between them.
- All figures are provisional and can be revised, and lists change when trusts check (“validate”) who is still waiting.
What can I do with this information?
In England you have a legal right to start consultant-led, non-urgent treatment within 18 weeks of referral, with some exceptions, and you can usually choose where you are referred for a first outpatient appointment. Each hospital has a Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) that can help with questions about your wait. Your waiting time rights explained.
For up-to-date average waits for a particular specialty at a particular hospital, NHS England’s NHS England: My Planned Care site is updated more often than these monthly statistics. Talk to your GP about where to be referred: they know your clinical needs.
Not medical advice. If your symptoms change or get worse while you wait, contact your GP or the team treating you. If it is not an emergency, NHS 111 online or calling 111 can tell you where to go, including urgent treatment centres, which often have shorter waits. Call 999 or go to A&E for life-threatening emergencies such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding or signs of a stroke.
Frequently asked questions
Which hospital trust has the shortest waiting list?
There is no single answer: it depends on the measure and the specialty. Use the table above to sort by the measure you care about, and check the specialty pages, because waits vary a lot between departments in the same trust.
Can I choose a hospital with shorter waits?
In England you can usually choose which hospital you are referred to for a first outpatient appointment, including some independent hospitals that provide NHS care. Ask your GP. Choice does not apply to emergencies and some other services. See your waiting time rights.
Why does a trust show n/s?
n/s means the trust did not submit referral to treatment data to NHS England for August 2026. We do not carry forward older figures.
How often is this page updated?
NHS England publishes A&E, diagnostics (DM01) and referral to treatment (RTT) statistics every month, usually on the second Thursday. A&E figures cover the previous month; diagnostics and RTT figures are a month further behind. This site refreshes when new files are published.
Are these waits for my hospital or the whole trust?
The whole trust. Most trusts run more than one hospital, and NHS England publishes these figures at trust level.
How should I cite these figures?
Waiting Times UK, “Compare NHS waiting times by hospital trust”, NHS England data for August 2026 (A&E September 2026), https://waitingtimesuk.co.uk/compare (accessed [date]). Where possible, cite the official publisher too.
Who wrote this page and where do the figures come from?
Written and maintained by the Waiting Times UK editorial team at Oaknest Media Ltd, an independent publisher that is not part of the NHS. Every figure is taken from an official publication, shown with its date, and linked below; where we add up or compare figures ourselves we say so. This page has not been reviewed by a clinician and is not medical advice. Page last updated 1 November 2026, from the data files named below. Figures change when the publisher releases new data.
